How it started
iControl started on Swedish construction sites in 2012, after supervisors asked for something that could replace handwritten reports.
2012
As Alexander Selling sat in on hundreds of building inspections, it was obvious how much time site management lost turning paper into reports. Together with SBUF and Sweden’s largest contractors, they built iSpect, an app for inspectors. SBUF funds one IT project a year.
2013
SBUF funded phase 2. A steering committee formed with NCC, Skanska, and PEAB.
2014
Contractors asked for the same thing for daily reports. SBUF funded a third IT project in a row. iControl launched that fall and won SBUF’s construction innovation of the year.
2015
JM compared iControl with pen and paper. Time spent on paperwork was cut in half. Supervisors recommended it onto more projects. NCC chose iControl for three hospitals in Södermanland after the state required ongoing digital quality documentation.
2016
JM evaluated iControl for the group. Two KTH master’s students wrote “The modern way of communicating.” Site management and subcontractors both found it easy and time-saving: company-wide insight, better quality, lower cost, and less stress on site.
Today
A supervisor photographs an item on their iPhone or iPad, and it shows up in the web portal where the project manager assigns it, follows it up and closes it.
iControl also gives management insight into project performance over time – the most common faults, who did what and when. That lets contractors improve their next projects, cut budget costs and, most importantly, make customers happier.
